King of Pentacles

The suit · Pentacles

body, money, time, the things that take actual days

Where it sits

The one who is answerable for it. Authority that comes with a bill attached.

How this suit behaves

Heavy and honest. Pentacles do not lie about how long something takes.

Take it into a reading

Love

You are the one who keeps this standing: the bills, the plans, the ride home. That is the job, and it does not run on feeling alone. Say what you can actually carry. Say what you need carried. Being the steady one is a position, not a personality; if you never hand any of it over, the steadiness turns into distance.

I drew King of Pentacles about this relationship. What is actually stuck?

Work

You hold the final word, so you hold the consequences. Sign off and you own the outcome. Delegate the execution, keep the accountability. The authority is real and so is the invoice attached to every decision you make. Put the number on the table before you promise anything.

I drew King of Pentacles about work. Where do I move first?

Money

You are the one who answers for it. Name the real figure, on paper, in front of whoever shares the account. Build the reserve before the want. You can carry people for a while, but each month you do it quietly is a month you spend your own security on someone else's. Decide what you fund, and say so out loud.

I drew King of Pentacles about money. Is it actually short, or am I afraid to spend it?

How you are

You are the reliable one, and it is starting to weigh. Count what you actually provide and what it costs you to keep providing it. Keep the parts that make sense. Put down the parts you took on because nobody else would. A steady hand still needs a limit it names out loud.

If King of Pentacles is naming a state I am in, should I rest first or move first?

Where this comes from

The 78 illustrations are the 1909 Rider–Waite deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith (1878–1951). More than seventy years after her death it is in the public domain in the US, the EU and Japan — the licence tag on every single file was checked on Wikimedia Commons. The original scans have had their outer border and title band trimmed, and one pass of tone laid over them so they sit with the frame. The frame, the banner and the card back were made here. The reader portraits are public-domain paintings — several decorative panels by Mucha (1860–1939), plus Copernicus by Matejko (1873), The Alchymist by Wright (1771) and The Crystal Ball by Waterhouse (1902). Their licence tags were checked one by one on Wikimedia Commons too, then cropped and toned to match.

The wording on this page is editorial — this site's reading of the card, not a quotation from Waite. Waite's own divinatory meanings are in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910), which is in the public domain.
